Incorporated in 1996 through the amalgamation of the towns of Grand Centre, Cold Lake and Canadian Forces Base 4 Wing, Cold Lake became a city October 1, 2000.

The Tri-City Mall opened April 1997, Wal-Mart in 2001, making Cold Lake the commercial center of northeastern Alberta. The local trading area has a population of about 30,000 while the greater regional trading area comprises approximately 50,000.
The planning and development department of Cold Lake is very active. Many residential sub-divisions are underway that include several rural acreage subdivisions. New construction is booming, as is the re-sale housing market. Cold Lake’s growth potential and economic future looks prosperous.

One of the most beautiful parts of Cold Lake is the lake itself. It is the 7th largest in the province of Alberta. It is 22 km 13.6 miles wide and 27 km 13.6 miles long with an area of 370 km2. The 100 m depths are home to some prize fish.
The lake is frozen for 5 months of the year. The tackle shop at the marina boasts a sheet showing break up dates for the past 50 years. The Cold Lake Marina is the largest of its size in western Canada supporting 255 berths. It has been chosen by the city of Edmonton to host the sailing competition for the 2008 summer Olympic Games bid.
